Year of Astronomy, Lincoln Bicentennial Top Early Events

Agencies will be able to create ads around the 44th presidential inauguration, the Lincoln bicentennial, Alaska and Hawaii statehood and the switch to digital television.

The International Year of Astronomy and the inauguration of the United States’ 44th president will give advertisers an early start on 2009 ad themes and tie-ins, but that will be just the beginning of the eventful year.

February will open with the Super Bowl football classic in Tampa Bay and will be followed by a triple anniversary on February 12:

  1. The bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln;
  2. The bicentennial of Biologist Charles Darwin;
  3. The 100th anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

May 30--Rededication of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.

June 3--Microsoft’s scheduled release of the Windows 7 operating system

July 3-5--Global Conference on Abraham Lincoln at Oxford University in England

July 14—Major League Baseball All-Star Game, St. Louis

July 22--The longest total solar eclipse of the 21st Century

August 12--100th anniversary of the first event at the Indianapolis Speedway

Sept. 12—University of Minnesota opens new $228 million, 50,000-capacity TFC Bank Stadium in game against Air Force Academy

Sept. 15--NASA launches Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover toward Mars

Oct. 2 --The International Olympics Committee will announce the site of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games

Dec. 12—Royal Caribbean Cruise Line will launch the world’s largest passenger ship, the 5400-passenger Oasis of the Seas

Dec. 31--100th Anniversary of the opening of the Manhattan Bridge

50th Anniversary Celebrations

The year will also mark the 50th anniversary of some major events: The 1959 list included:

  • Jan. 3—Alaska admitted to statehood
  • Feb. 22—Lee Perry wins the First Daytona 500
  • March 9 – The Barbie Doll makes her debut
  • April 9 – NASA announces the Mercury 7, the first seven astronauts
  • April 25—The St. Lawrence Seaway opens from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean
  • Aug. 14—Explorer 6 sends the first pictures of Earth from space
  • Aug. 21—Hawaii becomes the 50th state
  • Sept. --Luna 2 crashes on the moon.
  • Oct. 13—NASA launchers Explorer 7
